Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: There’s a Hole in My Floor

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: There’s a Hole in My Floor explains congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from the perspective of a child who underwent corrective surgery as a baby and is now living a healthy and fulfilling life. Easy to understand language and vivid illustrations are used to inform young patients, their families and friends about what CDH is, how it can be treated and what outcomes they can expect. An analogy is used to help explain what CDH is, comparing the body to a house and CDH as a ‘hole in the floor’. Every step of the hospital journey is described – starting from the prenatal diagnosis, to birth, to surgery, and finally to postoperative care, to improve understanding and reduce fear.

This book is designed to help:

• Caregivers of a newborn with CDH understand the anatomy and hospital course

• The patient when they grow up and want to understand where their scars came from

• Family members, including young siblings who want to understand why their new brother or sister is or was in the hospital

The end of the book contains a ‘Facts’ section with important information and answers to commonly asked questions, as well as what to expect before and after surgery, to supplement conversations with doctors. A glossary of ‘Doctor’s Words’ is also included to provide helpful definitions of relevant medical terms in plain language, along with a page to take notes for your own hospital experience, if applicable.

Through science and colorful illustration, this book not only aims to empower patients and their families but is also an enjoyable and educational gift for kids who are curious to learn more about the fascinating world of medicine.

$1 from every copy of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: There’s a Hole in My Floor sold will be donated to CDH International, a nonprofit organization raising awareness and funding for CDH research.
