In Biliary Atresia: My Troublesome Tree, a young girl walks readers through her experience with biliary atresia. Biliary atresia is a complex disease that blocks the bile system causing liver failure in babies. In order to help patients as well as their families and friends understand the complicated anatomy, the story uses a whimsical analogy, describing the liver and the biliary system as a magnificent tree that becomes diseased. Every step of the process is described through this analogy in easy to understand language and vibrant illustration to improve understanding and reduce fear—starting from disease onset, to the Kasai procedure, liver transplantation, and finally immunosuppression medicines.
These books are designed to help:
• Caregivers of a newborn with biliary atresia understand the anatomy and hospital course
• The patient when they grow up and want to understand where their scars came from
• Family members, including young siblings who want to understand why their new brother or sister is or was in the hospital
Further, to help supplement conversations with doctors, answers to common questions and other important information is included in a ‘Facts’ section at the end of the book. You will also find a helpful glossary of ‘Doctor’s Words’ with relevant medical terms explained in plain language.
Science and colorful illustration come together in Biliary Atresia: My Troublesome Tree to not only empower patients and their families but also educate and inspire kids who are curious about the fascinating world of medicine.
